LOVE ACTUALLY TRAILER ANALYSIS
Love Actually is a romantic comedy film that has an ensemble cast of well known actors. These include Alan Rickman, Hugh Grant, Emma Thompson and Keira Knightly. The use of having these actors as the cast of the film makes it a unique selling point of the film. The target audience of this film is mainly couples or women. The high level of romance that is involved in the film is a genre indicator and attracts the target audience to watch the film.
Camera:
One camera shot that we can see used in the trailer is a two shot of the couples kissing. This is a genre indicator, as it is conventional to see this in romantic comedy films. Another type of camera shot that we can see in the film is a close up of one of the protagonists faces. This is effectively used as it shows to the audience their facial expressions, so they can empathise with how they are feeling.
Mise en Scene:
The costumes that are worn by the characters in the film are very casual and naturalistic, which represent them as normal people of a middle class status. The props used in the film such as Christmas trees and lights hints to us that it is set in the Christmas period and that it will have a festive side to the film.
Editing:
Due to the large ensemble cast for the movie, a lot of fast pace cuts are used, to introduce all of the characters to the audience, as well as give them a brief overview of the storyline. Also, the large cast meant that no characters were given much of prevalence in the trailer.
Sound:
One type of diegetic sound that was used in the trailer is dialogue. This was shown by the humorous lines said by the characters to indicate the genre of comedy to the audience. One other type of diegetic sound that we can hear in the trailer is the crashing noises when one of the protagonists falls over. This again is a genre indicator of the film. Soundtrack is one type of non diegetic sound that is used in the trailer. The music is jolly and funny, which sets a happy mood to the audience. Another type of non diegetic sound that is heard is narration. This is effective as it tells the audience a brief outline of the plot of the movie.
