Full Certificate Research of Our Film

Our final decision of the certificate of our film is 15. This is due to the storyline of our movie being revolved around a psychotic clown who has recently escaped from a nearby mental asylum, who causes chaos by terrorising two teenage siblings. Another element that influenced our decision of the certificate is our comparison to the clown based horror movie "IT." The chart above shows the audience of "IT" who watched the film in cinema. It shows to us that the most common age band to watch the movie was ages 15-24, with a gender balance of 52% male to 48% female. These results conform to our target audience for our movie.

Mood Board

This is the mood board that we have created that relates to our horror film "The Craze." We have gathered a selection of images that we feel are relatable to the storyline of the movie. These pictures include a family home, a brother and sister and a clown. These are some of the key elements of our film. We also consider the set of images to be conventional to the overall film genre of horror. Our mood board can also inspire ideas in which we can use for our film trailer, as it can show us other conventions of horror films that we haven't used yet.

Updated 2nd Production Title

This is the background and design for our second production title, which will replace White House Films. We found the background to be more naturalistic and creative than our original design. We will use White Text against the background.

Soundtrack Research 3

Soundtrack Research 3:

We have found another audio clip of non copyright music that we could potentially use in our film trailer as non diegetic soundtrack.

The music has a calming and relaxing feel to it as it is played on an acoustic guitar, which is ideal for introducing and opening our film trailer. Therefore, we could place this soundtrack at the beginning of our trailer, to compliment the opening shots that the audience see.

Production Title 2:

Production Title Company 2:

For our second production title which we have designed, we imported the image of a white house onto a black background, with black and white text across the design. Because of this design, we have named this production company "White House Films." Our reason for this design is that we wanted a white image to be against a black background, as the dark colours connote fear and horror

Production Title Design 1

Production Company Title 1:

This is our first decision of a production title that we have come up with. The title of "Asylum Productions" came from the idea of our film's antagonist escaping from an asylum. We decided to keep the design simple by having an old fashioned projector as the main image. We feel that the image suits well to use for a production company.

Target Audience Research:

Target Audience Research:

The target audience for films of the horror genre is teenagers and young adults. A reason for this could be that the protagonists of horror movies tend to be between these ages, which would mean that the audience may be able to relate with the characters more.

As well as this, groups of people of these ages tend to spend time together by watching horror films, as it is a way for them to socialise and be entertained.

On the back of these reasons, we have decided to give our film an age rating of 15. We feel this would be suitable for our movie, due to it meeting the criteria of the film certificate. Also, it would please and attract people from our genre's target audience.

Green Screen Projection Images

Green Screen Projection Images:

In our film trailer, we are going to be including scenes of a news report in a news casting studio. The images below will be used as a projection with the scenes that we filmed using a green screen. This will give the overall effect of having Hannah and Baily as News reporters.

This is a news studio. The green screen would be able to project Baily or Hannah sitting within the studio.

This image shows a news desk. We will project Baily to be shown as sitting at the desk on the chair, as if he is presenting the news.

Updated Wanted Poster

                               Updated Wanted Poster:

This is just a minor update of our final wanted poster. Our only change from the other wanted poster is the replacement of the picture with the makeup on Baily, with the picture with the clown mask on Baily. Other than this, the design and text on the poster remains the same.

Final Choice of Antagonist - Appearance

Final Choice of Antagonist - Appearance

Our original idea for the clown's appearance was to apply makeup on the face. We thought this would be a really good idea, as the audience would be able to see the clear facial expressions and emotions of the character. We created several ideas and designs with the make up, which we thought would  be used in the final product of the trailer. However, when we re created the design again, we thought that it didn't look like a clown that had an appearance that would strike enough fear into our audience.

So, instead of using the makeup, we went and purchased a mask from a shop that specialises in scary costumes. We wanted to use a mask with many terrifying features. We felt that the mask pictured above was a perfect choice for a prop. Our other reason that justifies the choice of a mask over makeup was that we felt wearing a mask would suit the personality of our antagonist - an escapee from a mental institution.

Location Pictures From Air Raid Shelter

Pictures From Air Raid Shelter Location:

Here are a selection of images that we took ourselves in the location of the air raid shelter. We wanted to photograph features that we could use in our film trailer. All photographs were taken by Shannon, although I had to put torches beside the camera when taking the photos, due to the darkness of the abandoned shelter. These photographs could potentially be used within our film trailer.

Soundtrack Research 2

This is another clip of non diegetic soundtrack that we have listened to that we feel is suitable for our horror film trailer, as well as one that we are highly considering.  The main part of the soundtrack, that we are most likely to use, starts at 0:17. This is because of the increase of volume and tempo in the music. One of the most effective features of this piece of soundtrack is its low bass notes. This helps builds tension and is conventionally heard within the horror genre.

Character's Interview - Hannah

Hannah's Character Interview:

In this video, Baily asks Hannah interview questions for her role as a news reporter in our horror film trailer. The questions remain the same that are asked for all of the group, which are:

1. Why do you think you are suited to the role you are playing in the film trailer?
2. What do you think about the plot?
3. After seeing other horror film trailers how do you think ours is different from others?
4. As we are doing a horror film what do you think of the genre?

Character's Interview - Sean

My Character Interview:

This is the video for my interview in which Baily asks me a series of questions about why I should have a starring role in our horror film trailer. The questions that I am asked are:

1. Why do you think you are suited to the role you are playing in the film trailer?
2. What do you think about the plot?
3. After seeing other horror film trailers how do you think ours is different from others?
4. As we are doing a horror film what do you think of the genre?

Behind the Scenes Work

Behind The Scenes Work:

Here we have a picture that we chose to take whilst on location and in between filming shots. The image shows us our choice of camera shot that we were using for the next scene. The picture also shows the location that we filmed in - a shallow stream going through Ashtead Common. This shows how we filmed one of the shots, with Baily having to stand within the stream to perfect the shot.

Location 3 - Sean's House (Fetcham)

Location 3: Sean's House

This is our final location research, which we filmed at my house, in Fetcham. In this video, we analyse the features of the setting. This will help us decide if it is suitable as a location in our horror film trailer.

Saturday 4 November 2017

Location 2 - Gaywood Road

Location 2: Gaywood Road

This is our second choice of location, Gaywood Road, which is also in Ashtead. We analyse the features of the location, to see if we feel that it is suitable to be used as a setting in our horror film trailer.

Location 1 - Ashtead Common

Location 1: Ashtead Common

In this video, we are analysing the positive and useful features of Ashtead Common, which is our first choice of location to research. These features show why this specific location is effective and why it should be used in our film trailer.

Wanted Poster Final

Wanted Poster Final Design:

After looking at several different designs, this is our final choice of wanted poster outline. We like the simple style of the template, as well as the bold text at the top of the page, which stands out clearly. We feel that this is an improvement to the poster design that we originally looked at, due to it being more suitable for a horror film based in the UK, whereas the other design seemed more suited to an action-adventure film.

We then imported the picture of the antagonist and placed it onto the template, creating the overall poster as a prop for our film trailer. Overall, we feel that the features of this poster make it a useful and realistic prop to use in our horror film trailer.

Storyboard Idea

These images show our initial ideas for the storyboard of our film trailer. Although we feel that we will use the majority of these ideas in our final choice of storyboard, some ideas may change.

Saturday 21 October 2017

Final Makeup Choice

As a group, we have made a final decision on the makeup for our film's antagonist. We feel that this is a new and improved design compared to the original makeup idea that we had in mind, due to it's much improved detail. The use of the colour black connotes darkness and horror, which relates to the genre of our film. The use of the colour red, which is the makeup colour around the lips of the character, connotes death and blood, which could hint to our audience that he is a violent and aggressive clown. We still kept the original white foundation around Baily's face, as it builds a good base for the rest of the makeup on top, as well as it being conventional for the character of a clown. The images that are shown below highlight the makeup design, with the first picture showing more of the detail of the makeup features, whereas the other image shows Baily's face overall, which is more effective to show the final idea of the antagonist's appearance.

Completed Questionnaire Results

This picture shows to us our completed questionnaire, that was filled out by our target audience. These final results our very useful to us as a group as they can help influence and indicate our choices as a group.

Evil Clown Makeup Tutorial

The video that is shown above describes how you can use makeup to create the character of an evil clown. We feel that we will take several elements and ideas from this video to use for our antagonist of our film, such as the idea of heavy black eyeliner over a white foundation based face.

Bruise Makeup Tutorial

This video shows to us a tutorial for creating a bruising effect on a character using makeup. We feel that this could be a useful effect for us to use in our film trailer, as it could make it seem like they are hurt and injured.

Tuesday 17 October 2017

Horror Questionnaire

Above is the questionnaire for our audience, so they can fill it out with the relevant information. We made sure to use questions that will get the opinions from our film's target audience. For certain questions, we have placed a box, in which people can give other answers if we haven't listed them already. This offers the audience the chance to choose their own unique answer.

Wanted Poster Idea

This is the original idea for the Wanted Poster that we will use in our film's trailer. The design is very simple, however we have used a number of different fonts and Text designs for the writing on the poster. An image of our film's antagonist will appear in the outlined box, so the audience can identify with the character.

Film Brainstorm

The image above shows to us our initial ideas for our film trailer. Some of the ideas that we have decided on using for the final production include our film's title "The Craze" and the storyline of the movie. However there are other elements that are still undecided, such as the backing soundtrack to the trailer.

Character Profiles

Character Profiles:

Shannon: One of the protagonists of the movie, she plays the role of a victim of the clown character. She is the sister of Sean, the other protagonist of the movie. She has a very shy and quiet personality, as well as being childish and immature, which is why she would fit the role of the stereotypical horror film protagonist.  Her personality would make the audience want to empathise with her.

Sean: The brother of Shannon and the other main protagonist of the film. Although he is similar to Shannon, has a slightly more confident personality, although he can also be a timid character. Due to this trait, it would make the audience want to empathise with him.

Baily (The Clown): The antagonist of the movie. He has a rough background, and is very lonely, having previously been in a psychiatric hospital. This drives him to make the choice to go out and take out his anger by dressing up as a sinister, evil clown out on the streets, to terrify the public.

Make up Ideas

Make Up Ideas:
The pictures that we have taken that are seen below show our initial ideas for the makeup of our antagonist. We have taken inspirations from both the main antagonist from the 2017 horror film
"IT," as well as the Joker, from the 2008 action adventure movie "The Dark Knight Rises."

This image highlights the facial expression of the character, showing an uncomfortable, evil glare on the character's face.

This image highlights one of the of the sides of the character, to show the makeup around the lip, as well as the black shadow around the eyes.

This shows to us the other side of the character's face, with the symmetry of the character's face on either side.

We took a final close up image of Baily staring into the camera. It shows the full picture and highlights all aspects of the character's makeup.

Soundtrack Research 1

Soundtrack Research 1:

One piece of soundtrack that we have found involves slow building tension and eerie sounds. We feel that it would be a good choice due to use in a scene where we would want to build tension.

The music intensifies at 0:31, which is the extract that we would use in our trailer. The soundtrack mainly contains white noise, which sounds like a gust of wind, that gives the effect of an abandoned setting, with high pitched chimes introduced further down the soundtrack.

Final Title Decision

Final Title Decision:

This is our final choice of title for our movie. We designed this title with the title designs from the website "Cool Text Generator."

We thought the style of silver text against a black background would be a good choice of design, as it sets a dark mood, and is conventional in comparison to other horror film title designs. The choice of a rigid and disjointed font works well as it will alludes that the film will involve chaos and uncertainty involved.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Trailer Analysis

THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY TRAILER ANALYSIS

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is a film which can be considered as either being of the action adventure or fantasy genre. A genre indicator of the action adventure side of the film is the combat scenes which are shown in the trailer. Whereas the idea of having fictional characters, such as dwarves and wizards indicates to the audience that there is the fantasy genre in the film. The target audience of the movie is mainly teenagers of both genders, or people who are generally interested in fantasy and fictional storylines.

Sound:
One type of non diegetic sound that we can hear in the trailer is narration from the characters, who are talking over the different scenes in the trailer. The use of this is effective as it helps introduce the audience to the characters. One type of diegetic sound that is heard is the dialogue of the character's of the film. This is used to show the emotions that they are feeling during the movie. Another example of non diegetic sound that is used in the background of the trailer is dramatic soundtrack. This is an effective choice to make as it increases the tension in the trailer, by gripping the audience.

Mise en Scene:
One example of mise en scene that shows to us that the film is partly of the fantasy genre is it's location. By having the setting of far away and fictional lands indicates the film's genre. The costumes of the characters are very unique, which helps the audience identify who they are. During the action and combat scenes that we can see in the trailer, the lighting is very low key, with only a few flame torches or lamps providing the source of light. This is effective, as it sets a more dramatic scene.

Camera:
An establishment shot is used at the beginning of the trailer, to introduce the setting of the film to the audience. It is also a good shot choice as it highlights the vast size of the location. An example of a camera angle that we can see used during the trailer is a high angle shot that is used to show the combat scenes. This is a good choice of shot as we can see the large amount of characters that are involved in the fight. Another example of a camera shot that we can see used in the trailer for The Hobbit is a close up, which is used to show the character's facial expressions, so the audience can empathise with their emotions.

Editing:
The cuts between the scenes at the beginning of the trailer are of a slower pace, as they want the audience to be introduced to the characters and the setting of the film. However, as it progresses, we see that more fast pace cuts are used to transition between the shots, to introduce the audience to the tension that is involved in the movie. Bilbo Baggins has the most screen time in the trailer, so the audience can empathise with how he is feeling throughout the scenes.

Whiplash Trailer Narrative Analysis

WHIPLASH TRAILER NARRATIVE ANALYSIS:

The trailer of the drama film "Whiplash" shows to us the different stages of narrative, that was invented by the  media theorist Tzvetan Todorov. The 5 stages of narrative are Exposition, Development, Complication, Climax and Resolution.

Exposition:
The exposition is where the characters and settings are introduced to the audience. Also the state of equilibrium is shown, which means that everything is seen as normal, with nothing unusual occurring. This is shown in the trailer for this film with the protagonist of the movie being introduced, with him narrating his background and what he is doing. The background music in this scene is very subtle and light.

Development:
Following the stage of Exposition, the trailer goes into the next narrative stage, which is the development stage. This means that something will happen which disrupts the equilibrium in the film. In Whiplash, we see this when the teacher throws an object across the room at the protagonist of the movie. This changes the atmosphere and is intensified with a change in sound and lighting, with the mood becoming darker.

Complication:
The next stage of narrative in Todorov's media theory is the Complication. In this stage, the development is extended and intensified, which means that something critically bad happens in the storyline to the movie. In the film Whiplash's case, this occurs when we see the teacher in the movie abusing the student by shouting at him and consistently beating him. The use of the Complication narrative stage is to grip the audience with tension, as all is going wrong for the protagonist of the film.

Climax:
The penultimate narrative stage of Todorov's theory is the climax. Here, you see the dramatic moment in which the plot hits the decisive point of the trailer or movie in which the change will occur. We see this in the trailer of Whiplash when the protagonist's father finds about the way the teacher had been treating his son. This hints to the audience that we will see the change at this moment in the storyline.

Resolution:
The resolution stage of Todorov's media theory is the final narrative part. It means that the equilibrium that was in the exposition stage will be restored. Due to it being a trailer, we aren't shown whether or not this stage occurs, which is an enigma for the audience.

Taken Trailer Analysis

TAKEN TRAILER ANALYSIS:

The film Taken is of the action adventure genre and stars Liam Neeson as the protagonist of the movie. This is a unique selling point of the movie, as he is highly popular with audiences, due to him appearing in other action films. The target audience of Taken is young adults, who are predominantly male.

Sound:
One of the sound types that we can hear in the trailer is diegetic. An example of when this is used is the dialogue when the protagonist is speaking on the phone. The tone in his voice when he speaks is fearless and with a lot of anger, which is a conventional representation of the protagonist in an action adventure film. The dialogue is also effectively used when the daughter is screaming and crying as she is being dragged away by the antagonist. This shows to us that she is fearful of what is happening to her and so the audience can empathise with her. The non diegetic soundtrack is used to intensify the action involved in the movie, due to its low tempo and loud volume.

Editing:
Slow motion editing is used to highlight the close relationship between the father and daughter in the film, when they hug at the beginning of the trailer. Also, the two characters are given the prevalence in the trailer, so the audience can empathise with them and their father-daughter relationship. A flashing cut is used to transition between certain scenes of the trailer, to indicate the film involves drama and tension. Several fast pace cuts are also used in the combat scenes in the trailer, to highlight the intense violence in the movie.

Mise en Scene:
The use of mobile phones by the two protagonists of the film shows to us that although the characters are a long distance away from each other, they can communicate with each other. The film's predominant location is the city of Paris, in France. It is conventional to see large cities as the setting of action adventure films, due to them being known to the audience, as well as being urban areas. The costumes of Liam Neeson's character and the antagonists of the movie are common representations of costumes for action adventure films, due to their colour and style.

Camera:
One shot type that we can see used effectively in the trailer is a birds eye view of the Eiffel Tower and the streets of Paris. This indicates to the audience the film's location and setting.
Several two shots are used of the father and daughter in the opening shots of the trailer, including an over the shoulder shot. By looking at this, it tells the audience that they have a close family relationship between each other. One type of camera angle that is seen in the trailer is a low angle shot of Liam Neeson attacking an antagonist of the film. The effect of this shot is to make his character have more control and authority in the scene.

The Curse of the Black Pearl Trailer Analysis

THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL TRAILER ANALYSIS:

The film Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl is a film of the Action adventure genre. The main theme of the film is based around English Pirates, in the early 18th Century. A lot of sword fighting is involved in the movie, which is a genre indicator of action adventure films. The film stars the popular and successful actor Johnny Depp, who plays the protagonist of the film. This would help attract an audience for the movie, as Depp has been involved many different films.

Sound:
One type of soundtrack that we can hear in the trailer for the movie is the sound of the pirates swords clashing in combat. This indicates that the film's genre is action adventure. Combat scenes involving weapons are conventional to films of this genre. One other piece of diegetic soundtrack that is used is dialogue. The accents of the characters can help the audience identify that they are pirates and whether they are the protagonists or antagonists of the movie. Soundtrack is an example of non diegetic sound that can be heard in the background of the trailer. The use of the soundtrack increasing in volume and tempo during the fight scenes, shows to the audience that tension is being built.

Camera:
One camera shot that is used at the beginning of the trailer is a close up of the antagonist of the movie. This is an effective shot as it shows his facial expressions, which is a stern and angry look. An example of a camera angle that is used is a low angle shot. This is shown when Captain Jack Sparrow, who is played by Johnny Depp, is introduced. Another example of a camera shot that is used in the film is a birds eye view shot, where the camera is looking down on the army of royal soldiers, as well as the large Union Jack flag also in the shot. This is used so we can identify the status of the characters.

Editing:
An example of an editing effect that is used in the trailer is making the valuable items of gold coins and necklaces seem brighter than they are, by adding a glowing effect coming off of them. Captain Jack Sparrow is given the prevalence throughout the trailer, so the audience can empathise with how he is feeling at the different points in the film. The transitions between the shots in the trailer vary during the trailer. In the opening parts of the trailer, the fades between scenes are slower, so the audience can be introduced to the characters and can have a basic understanding of the storyline. However, during the combat and action scenes, more fast cuts are used, to exploit the tension that is involved in the film.

Mise en Scene:
Due to the time period of the film being 18th century England, the costumes that are worn by the characters in the film are historic and therefore are shown as something that the audience cannot relate to. The props of Swords and treasure chests can also help show to us that the film is not based around modern times. A lot of the Curse of the Black Pearl is filmed at sea, although other seaports that are filmed at include areas of England and Jamaica. This is showing to us that although the film is set in a historic era of time, the film is not set in fictional locations. However, when the antagonist changes from to skeleton form, it hints to us that the curse is a fictional idea for the film.

Magazine Analysis 5

Film Magazine Analysis 5:

The magazine for the film shows the two protagonists of the movie Terminator. This film is of the action adventure genre, which is identified by the characters holding guns, and wearing darker clothing. The use of having a male and a female as the two characters on the cover shows that it will appeal to both genders.

The bright red text against a grey coloured background is effective, as it makes it stand out to the audience, by making it clearer  for them to see. Direct mode of address is used by the character, as they are staring straight at the camera. This is used to make the audience feel like they are in contact with the characters on the cover.

The effect of the background being grey and cloudy, looks like there is bad weather. This gives the film a darker mood and atmosphere. The use of addressing the magazine's features on the front cover entreagues the audience, by making them want to read more about it. The use of Arnold Schwarzenegger and his character from the movie on the front cover would make fans of him and of the Terminator film series be attracted to read the magazine.

Insidious Trailer Analysis

INSIDIOUS TRAILER ANALYSIS:

Insidious is a highly popular and successful horror movie that is directed by James Wan. This is a unique selling point of the film, as this director has directed other successful horror movies, such as Saw and The Conjuring. The film is based around a child, who becomes possessed by paranormal and ghostly figures. The target audience of Insidious is mainly teenagers and young adults, due to the theme of possessed characters.

Camera:
One effective camera shot that we can see used in the trailer is an over the shoulder shot. This is used to show an antagonist coming up behind one of the protagonists of the film. This is a good choice of camera shot, as they can see something that the character in the film cannot see. Another camera shot that is used in the trailer is an extreme close up of one of the character's eyes. This is a good choice of shot as it shows the fear that the character has. One effective camera angle that we can see used is a low angle shot of the female protagonist as she is looking up the stairs to the second floor of the house. This is an effective angle, as it highlights to the audience the size of the setting of the film.

Sound:
One effective type of diegetic sound that we can hear when watching the trailer is the sound of the metronome, as well as the other items that repeatedly tick. This is a unique theme of the film, which has been used to create a chilling atmosphere when the audience are watching the trailer. Another piece of diegetic sound that is heard in the trailer is dialogue, that we can hear used by the protagonists. From listening to the dialogue, the audience can identify the character's feelings of worry and fear. The main type of non diegetic sound that we can hear in the trailer of Insidious is soundtrack. This is used to increase the tense mood and atmosphere, as well as to put fear into the audience watching.

Editing:
One type of editing that is effectively used in the trailer of the film is the consistent cuts to the a black screen, with white text that reads "Insidious is Insidious" This would want to make audience members watch the film, as they would want to know what the message means. During the tense scenes of the trailer, where some of the characters are panicking and worried, fast pace cuts are used. Prevalence of the trailer is given to the parents of the child, who are the protagonists of the film. This is so the audience can empathise with the worrying emotion that they are feeling.

Mise en Scene:
The location of the movie is a old, haunted house in a normal American town. The use of this is to make it seem more realistic and relatable to the audience watching the film. The main lighting type that is shown in the trailer is low key, which is a genre indicator for a horror movie. As well as the location being naturalistic, the characters costumes are also very casual, which also makes it more relatable for the audience, as they feel the people could be like them.

Saw Trailer analysis

SAW TRAILER ANALYSIS:

The film Saw is of the horror genre  and is directed by well known horror film director James Wan. This is a unique selling point for the movie, as horror film fans enjoy his work with other horror films. The target audience for the movie is young adults and predominantly male, due to the violence and gore involved in the film.

Sound:
One type of diegetic sound that is used in the trailer is dialogue. The dialogue heard by the different character's can help the audience identify if they are a protagonist or an antagonist in the film. For example, the character talking over a radio in the background can be seen as the antagonist of the movie, due to his stern and chilling voice. Another example of diegetic sound that is in the film are the paranormal noises, which are heard in the background by the protagonists of the film. These are effective as they add fear to the trailer when being watched. Soundtrack is the main type of non diegetic sound that is heard in the trailer. It has a low tempo and is of a slow pace, to add to the eerie atmosphere of the trailer.

Mise en Scene:
The costumes that are worn by the characters in the trailer are very casual, which give the film a very naturalistic mood to it. It also makes the protagonists seem like normal people, which will make them seem realistic to the audience. However, the setting of the film would not be as relatable, as it is located in an abandoned building. This is a conventional location for a horror movie, as they are commonly viewed as scarier places to be around. The lighting changes frequently, with it sometimes being strobe lighting. This is effectively used as it increases the tension in the film, making it almost uncomfortable for the audience to watch.

Editing:
One key piece of editing that is used in the trailer for the film is having certain scenes put into slow motion. This is used to highlight to the audience what the characters are doing, as well as how they're feeling. The two young males are given prevalence in the trailer, so the audience can empathise with how they are feeling. Several fade to blacks are used to transition between the scenes, to slow down the pace of the trailer.

Camera:
One shot type that is shown in the trailer is a two shot. This is used to show the close and friendly relationship between the two protagonists of the movie. Another shot that we can see used in the trailer is a close up of the surveillance camera screen. This is an effective shot that is used as it shows that the characters of the film are being filmed, making the audience feel uncomfortable. An example of a camera angle that we can see in the trailer is a high angle shot. It is used to belittle the characters, as well as show that they are in no control of what has happened to them.

Get Out Trailer Analysis

The film Get Out is of the horror genre and it's main theme is of possessed antagonists and paranormal activity. The film's target audience is young adult couples, as that it who the movie's protagonists are.

Sound:
The sound in the trailer for the film is edited to make it have a stop-start effect. I feel that this is effective as it gives it an uncomfortable feel for the audience when they are watching the trailer. The dialogue in the trailer is used to help the audience identify who the protagonists and antagonists of the film are. The main type of  non diegetic sound that is used in the trailer is soundtrack or background instruments playing. This is used to add to the uncomfortable mood that is created in the trailer.

Camera:
One camera shot that is used in the trailer is a close up, of the protagonist's face. It effectively shows to the audience the fear on his face. Another shot type that we can see used in the trailer is a two shot of the young couple. This is used to show their close relationship. One camera angle that is used is a high angle shot, which is shown when the protagonist is looked down on when he is sitting on the sofa. This is an effective shot, as it makes him look smaller and lower down in status.

Mise en scene:
The setting and costumes of the characters in the film are very naturalistic, which makes the film seem very realistic and relatable to the audience. However this is juxtaposed by making certain characters in the film possessed. The lighting in the trailer is mainly high key, which is extremely unconventional for horror films, as it doesn't create a high amount of tension, or put fear into the audience who are watching the movie. The film is set in a common American neighbourhood, which is conventional for Horror movies.

Editing:
Prevalence in the trailer is given to the young couple, particularly the male in the relationship. This is so the audience can empathise with how he is feeling during the film, which is mainly attacked and intimidated. The cuts used in the trailer are mainly of a fast pace, to compliment the tension in the film.

The Cabin in the Woods Trailer Analysis

The Cabin in the woods is a film of the horror genre, which stars famous actor Chris Hemsworth. This is a unique selling point of the film, as he would attract audience members to watch the movie. One of the genre indicators of the film is the fact the protagonists of the film are a group of young adults.

Sound:
One type of diegetic sound that is used in the trailer is the crashing noises that are heard when something falls over. This is effective as it shows the audience that paranormal activity is one of the features and subjects of the movie. One of the other types of diegetic sound that is heard in the trailer is dialogue. This is used to for the audience to hear how the characters are feeling. One type of non diegetic sound that we can hear in the trailer is soundtrack. Two types of soundtracks are used - the first being happy and jolly, the others being dark and gloomy. These are used to help set the mood of the film.

Mise en scene:
One of the main features of the film is its location of an abandoned wooden cabin set in the woods. This is a good choice of location, as it is conventional for horror films and is also a genre indicator for the film. The costumes that are worn by the characters in the film are naturalistic to give off the effect that the audience can relate to them

Editing:
The transitions between the clips in the beginning of the trailer are of a slow pace. This is because they introduce the audience to the plot of the movie. However, as the trailer goes on, more fast pace cuts are used to create tension in the trailer. Prevalence of the trailer is given equally across the group of friends, so the audience can empathise with them.

Camera:
One camera shot that is chosen to be shown in the trailer for the film is a long shot. This is used to show the audience the winding and empty roads that lead through the woods. Another camera shot that we can see used in the trailer is a close up. This is effectively used to show the facial expressions of the protagonists, so the audience can empathise with how they are feeling. One camera angle type that is used is a high angle shot. This is used to look down on the cabin, to see how enclosed it is in the wooded area.

Film Magazine Cover Analysis 4

FILM MAGAZINE COVER ANALYSIS 4

This cover is taken from the film magazine Empire and features Captain Jack Sparrow (played by Johnny Depp) the protagonist of the Pirates of the Caribbean film series.

The use of having this character as the main image of the cover attracts a large audience due to him being from a well known film franchise.

Also, using this character attracts a largely male audience to read the magazine, as that is the target audience of Pirates of the Caribbean.

Direct mode of address is used in the magazine by making the character stare at the camera. This is effective as it makes the audience feel like they have contact with the character.

A mix of bright colours are used on the cover of the magazine to attract the audience by catching their eye.

The sticker on the left hand side of the cover reads "the on set exclusive" which makes the magazine sound rare.

The slogan on the magazine says "movies' biggest year ever!" This would attract a large varied audience as the magazine will preview films of many different genres for both genders and all ages.

Love Actually Trailer Analysis

LOVE ACTUALLY TRAILER ANALYSIS

Love Actually is a romantic comedy film that has an ensemble cast of well known actors. These include Alan Rickman, Hugh Grant, Emma Thompson and Keira Knightly. The use of having these actors as the cast of the film makes it a unique selling point of the film. The target audience of this film is mainly couples or women. The high level of romance that is involved in the film is a genre indicator and attracts the target audience to watch the film.

Camera:
One camera shot that we can see used in the trailer is a two shot of the couples kissing. This is a genre indicator, as it is conventional to see this in romantic comedy films. Another type of camera shot that we can see in the film is a close up of one of the protagonists faces. This is effectively used as it shows to the audience their facial expressions, so they can empathise with how they are feeling.

Mise en Scene:
The costumes that are worn by the characters in the film are very casual and naturalistic, which represent them as normal people of a middle class status. The props used in the film such as Christmas trees and lights hints to us that it is set in the Christmas period and that it will have a festive side to the film.

Editing:
Due to the large ensemble cast for the movie, a lot of fast pace cuts are used, to introduce all of the characters to the audience, as well as give them a brief overview of the storyline. Also, the large cast meant that no characters were given much of prevalence in the trailer.

Sound:
One type of diegetic sound that was used in the trailer is dialogue. This was shown by the humorous lines said by the characters to indicate the genre of comedy to the audience. One other type of diegetic sound that we can hear in the trailer is the crashing noises when one of the protagonists falls over. This again is a genre indicator of the film. Soundtrack is one type of non diegetic sound that is used in the trailer. The music is jolly and funny, which sets a happy mood to the audience. Another type of non diegetic sound that is heard is narration. This is effective as it tells the audience a brief outline of the plot of the movie.

Magazine Cover Analysis 3

FILM MAGAZINE COVER ANALYSIS 3:

This cover is by the film magazine company Total Film and shows the protagonists from the film "The Avengers."

The use of including both male and female characters in the image helps attract both genders to the film.

We can see that one of the characters is staring at the camera, as if she is looking at the audience. This use of direct mode of address is effective as it makes her look like she has contact with the audience.

Bright colours have been used across the cover. This is a good feature to have on the magazine as it draws in and attracts audiences to look at it.

A small bubble of text on the left hand side of the magazine says that it is a "collectible cover" with the sticker being coloured gold. This would be attractive to the target audience of the film, as it makes the magazine seem more rare and valuable.

I Am Legend Poster Analysis

I AM LEGEND POSTER ANALYSIS

The poster for the action-adventure film I Am Legend shows the protagonist of the film, played by Will Smith, walking alone on Planet Earth.

The use of having Will Smith as the protagonist of the film is a unique selling point of the film, as he is popular and well known to audience members.

The slogan of the film is "The last man on Earth is not alone." This makes the audience wonder what it means when it says he's "not alone."

A low angle shot is used to show the protagonist walking along the street. This is effective as it makes him look like he has a high status.

The lighting that is used in the backdrop of the poster is bright, while the protagonist is walking away from it. This shows that he is walking away from the light.

Film Magazine Analysis 2

FILM MAGAZINE ANALYSIS 2:

This magazine is by the company Total Film and shows us the protagonist from the film Avatar as the main image of the cover.

One effective feature that we can see on the magazine is the use of direct mode of address, with the character staring at the audience in the picture. The use of this is effective as it makes it seem like the audience are in contact with the character.

The use of listing what articles are included in the magazine is effective, as it intrigues the audience and makes them want to read more about the magazine.

The use of including the protagonist of Avatar as the central image of the magazine is effective as the audience will be familiar of who the character is. This is due to Avatar being one of the most commercially successful films of all time, with billions of people worldwide going to watch the film.

The magazine's primary colour is blue. I feel that this has been used to make the magazine stand out to people when in shops.

A close up is used as the camera shot of the character. This is effective as it shows to the audience the character's facial expressions in the picture.

The film is based around Simon and Nick's characters, who are the protagonists, saving each other and their friends from a zombie apocalypse in England. The target audience of the film is mainly adults due to the film's violence and bad language, but also teenagers.

Mise en scene:
The costumes that are worn by the protagonists in the film are very naturalistic, which will make the audience empathise with the characters more. The use of having the film set in England, particularly in London is conventional for comedy films as they help make the film more naturalistic. The use of the protagonist's using props of shovels and cricket bats in the replacement of guns shows as well that it's more natural.

This is effective angle to use as it makes the protagonists look lower down in status than the zombies, creating a comedy effect.

Editing:
Simon Pegg's character is given prevalence in the trailer of the film for the audience to empathise with him. The transitions between the scenes in the trailer are of a fast pace, to highlight the fast pace tension and action in the film to the audience.

Skyfall Poster Analysis

SKYFALL POSTER ANALYSIS:

One feature of the film's poster which is effective is the use of colours in the photo. The picture has been given a black and white effect, as these colours conform to the genre of action films.

The use of making James Bond wear a black and white suit is effective, as it shows that he is a smartly dressed character, which makes him have a high status.

In the picture, James Bond is shown to be walking a through a tunnel with a light background. This shows that he might be walking away from the light. As well as this, Bond is shown to be looking directly at the audience. This is an example of direct mode of address.

The release date of the film is shown at the bottom of the poster, along with the production titles. This is informative to the audience, as it gives them key information of the film.
