Representation Evaluation

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

One way in which we have conformed to conventional horror film stereotypes is through our choice of location. We chose to film in an air raid shelter, which had no lighting inside, as well as being empty and abandoned. We used this to give the effect of a location which was unknown to the protagonists, which they therefore feared to explore.

We feel that the location shows some resemblance to one of the locations used in the horror movie "Saw." For example, both locations are shown as derelict and uninhabited, as well as where the antagonist is commonly seen.

Another feature that we feel was heavily conventional to a horror movie is the physical appearance of our antagonist, the clown. We felt heavily inspired by Pennywise, the clown from the horror movie IT. However one of the main differences between the two characters is that our clown acts in a more sinister and evil way, compared to Pennywise's more comical personality.

The two images show the similarities and differences of our antagonist's appearance compared to Pennywise from IT. One of the similarities is the use of the colour red on the costume. The colour red connotes fear and danger, which is one of the themes of both our film and IT. However, I feel that the major difference is the overall appearance of the costume. Our clown has a more sinister and evil appearance, with the detailed mask and naturalistic outfit. This opposes Pennywise's comical and circus-style clown appearance. This costume design is unconventional.
